It will not have escaped the insightful reader that the key to Hal’s idea was time. A white hole is a black hole with time reversed.

But is such reversal of time really possible? Most phenomena occur in one direction only: reversing them in time is not possible. A dropped egg does not bounce. Past and future are different.

The reconstruction of the life of a black hole I have given so far is too simple, for it neglects everything that distinguishes the past from the future, and certainly there are many phenomena that do so. To complete the picture, we need to take into account phenomena that cannot be reversed in time—the “irreversible” aspects in the life of black holes. This leads us—once again—toward questions about the nature of time.

What makes past and future different? Why are they different at all? Why do we remember the past and not the future? Why is it possible to decide what we shall do tomorrow, but not what we did yesterday? I have been working closely with these questions over the last few years.

This last part of the booklet is about the irreversible aspects in the life of a black hole. I start with an amusing ongoing controversy that has scientists squabbling. Then I want to tell you about a number of things I think I have recently understood about the direction of time—and that seem quite beautiful to me.
